<p>You sit down at your computer and face the daunting task of figuring out how to attract more customers.</p>
<p>You write an article, record a video, and post to your blog. Then, you wait.</p>
<p>And wait. And wait&#8230;</p>
<p>A day or two later, you check your statistics and see that you got a whopping 16 visitors. This from hours of hard work, fighting through the process of creating content that you thought was going to kill it and bring in a ton of traffic for you.</p>
<p>Things like this happen all the time to (almost) everyone, at every level. Flops happen every single day, all around you.</p>
<p>When was the last time you saw a commercial that left you giggling over how terrible it was?</p>
<p>How many television shows get cancelled every year?</p>
<p>Thousands of goofy shirts will end up on the clearance rack only to end up buried in someone’s closet to be soon forgotten.</p>
<p>The funniest part is that this can easily be avoided.<span id="more-3832"></span> Your prospects are showing you exactly what they need to see and/or hear from you to become one of your most valued customers. All you have to do is figure out how to “see” what they’re revealing to you. This is where I come in.</p>
<p>Let’s review the possible reasons you aren’t getting the traffic you wanted.</p>
<h2>1. Your content is boring.</h2>
<p>When was the last time you actually had fun creating content? If you can’t remember, then you’re definitely doing it wrong. Marketing isn’t boring and if you aren’t having fun creating it, your prospects probably won’t enjoy reading it.</p>
<p>It’s one thing to educate people about what you sell, but it’s another thing entirely to do it in a way that puts people to sleep.</p>
<p>Before I dive too deep into this one, there’s another problem that’s fixed with the same solution&#8230;</p>
<h2>2. YOU are boring.</h2>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3849" style="margin: 9px;" title="Why You Are Not Getting Traffic" src="http://www.stompernet.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/hand2.png" alt="" width="300" height="225" />If your content is boring, it’s not going to do well for you.</p>
<p>If you are boring, it’s going to be an uphill battle for you for the entire length of time you’re in business.</p>
<p>Everything you do online is marketing. Everything.It doesn’t matter if you’re tweeting about your kids, if you’re not showing who “you” are in the right light&#8230;you’re going to lose the interest of your prospects. No matter what you’re selling, the key to attracting decent people is matching your message to your market.</p>
<p>How many bloggers out there (the successful ones) have little or no personality? I can’t think of any. They stand up for what they believe in, they focus on the needs of their readers, and they force their message out with their voice from one side of the Internet to the other. Social media has given the power back to the entrepreneur to swipe the attention from the Wal Mart’s and Best Buy’s of the world.</p>
<p>Take a few minutes to Google some successful bloggers: Gary Vaynerchuk, Perez Hilton, Robert Scoble, John Chow, Shoemoney, and Darren Rowse.</p>
<h3>Here are the things to pay attention to:</h3>
<ul>
<li>How are they interacting with their customers?</li>
<li>What are they talking about  that isn’t work (For instance, John Chow is obsessed with food <img src='http://www.stompernet.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> ?</li>
<li>Why do you think they act the way they do? How does it impact you as a reader?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Bonus </strong>- What methods of content distribution and syndication are they using (go a few pages deep to find new sites you aren’t using)?</p>
<p>Now, take a good look at your marketplace. What isn’t being done right now by your competition? Pay special attention to the market leaders. Do they have boring E-Commerce sites that have no personality? Check out where their links are coming from and look at the content they put out. Are they boring? If so, all you have to do is put out a touch of personality, have fun and you’ll soar past the competition with ease and take the attention of prospects.</p>
<p>Last but not least, I have this concept that I refer to as “The One Question” that can dominate a marketplace with a single piece of content. It’s based around the idea of answering the question (there may be more than one) that your audience is already asking themselves.</p>
<p>Finding the question can be done easily on Yahoo Answers (look for questions, not the answers), niche forums, and blogs. Simply answer the question with the content you create.</p>
<h2>3. The wrong place.</h2>
<p>If you’ve done the steps above, you should be ready to create some content that will rock. That brings us straight to the next mistake that people make all the time. When creating great content, the next step is to put it out!</p>
<p>There are dozens of ways for you to put your content out there: articles, videos, press releases, blog posts, podcasts, forums, etc…</p>
<p>The problem is that most people don’t put those pieces of content in the right places.</p>
<p>Here are the “must use” sites for each different type:</p>
<ul>
<li>Video – YouTube, MetaCafe, Viddler, Revver, Dailymotion, Blip.TV</li>
<li>Podcasts – iTunes (must be done from inside of the iTunes software), Podnova, Podcast Alley, Odeo.</li>
<li>Articles – EzineArticles, GoArticles, ArticleDashboard, Articlesbase, Searchwarp.</li>
<li>Social Bookmarking – Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, Delicious</li>
<li>Press Releases – PRWeb, Webwire (to get insane results, pay for a $19.95 upgrade).</li>
</ul>
<p>While the sites above are important in general, there are also niche-based sites that are attracting only your potential prospects. And that’s okay. Do a Google search for your main keywords combined with words like form, article directory, video site, etc…</p>
<h2>4. You’ve Mistyped.</h2>
<p>An obvious problem is if you can’t figure out basic grammar or how to write in a way that your readers can understand and absorb, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.</p>
<p>What I mean by “mistyped” is this. Most marketers aren’t matching their message to their audience in the format that they deliver it! Do you know your demographics? If you don’t know the average age and sex of your consumer, it’s going to be very tough to match the type of content you put out to your potential customers. (In other words, you need to figure this out.)</p>
<p>To find out this information put out a simple survey to your customers and motivate them to take the survey by offering something cool. A coupon, a teleseminar, or a new report is plenty to motivate people to spend a few moments of their time to give you this important data. Even better, ask them if they would prefer to get content from you in video, text, or audio format.</p>
<p>If you want to be really smart and save yourself some time, simply put out all of your content in each of the three formats above. While it’s not impossible to find the best way to reach your audience, it is impossible to reach ALL of them unless you deliver content the way they want it. Even if it’s 5% of your audience that listens to podcasts on the way to work, 5% of any audience can equal big bucks if you become the obvious choice in their minds when they think of what you sell.</p>
<h2>5. The 1 Hit Wonder</h2>
<p>Are you a statistics junky? Do you check your email every three minutes to see if another sales notice has rolled in? Most of us do this all the time, yet most miss out on some of the most important statistics.</p>
<p>With Ezinearticles.com, they have a detailed statistics panel that you can use to see the effectiveness of every single article you release onto their site. It tells you how many views you get, how many clicks you get, and how many times that publishers have downloaded your article.</p>
<p>What’s the value in these numbers?</p>
<p>It’s very simple.</p>
<p>While we’re all smart enough to figure out how to write good content, only the reader can indicate how good it really is. Those statistics show you exactly which articles are performing the best and which give you the ability to take further action based upon how it performs for you.</p>
<p>The one hit wonder syndrome is when you’re focusing on one specific type of content distribution for traffic and/or link building (which is foolish).</p>
<p>(By the way, this could be a video, press release, or podcast. The type of content makes no difference.)</p>
<p>Any time you have a piece of content perform better than others, that’s the perfect indication that your audience loves it and wants more!!!</p>
<p>Develop a marketing campaign around whatever pieces of content perform best for you. Remember, you cannot decide the way that people want to receive your content&#8230;they do. If they love an article you’ve written, create a video series based on the same idea. Write a press release to announce this video series. Create a podcast on the same topic or a variation that makes sense.</p>
<p>Now&#8230;go fix what’s broken.</p>
<p>Of the five things above, I guarantee you’re doing at least three of them. It’s time to analyze what you’re doing, figure out what’s wrong, and start doing things the smart way. Your prospects will thank you &#8211; with their credit cards.</p>

<p>CPA <em>(Cost Per Action)</em> is a hot topic in the internet marketing space right now, and it doesn&#8217;t have ANYTHING to do with accounting.</p>

<p><em>(We got a TON of comments on the previous blog post we did with my Mike Filsaime interview about CPA marketing, just this past weekend.)</em></p>
<p>This is <em>exactly</em> what the landscape looked like when PPC hit big before people had even heard of a &#8220;Google Slap&#8221;.  I think that just like PPC, the early adopters are going to get the biggest slice of this pie.</p>
<p>But today I want to tell you about someone else who is using CPA networks in a really unique way <em>(that no one else is talking about yet)</em>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I think that it&#8217;s important for you to check it out even if you&#8217;re not going to take part in the CPA gold rush that&#8217;s happening right now.</p>
<p>See, that reason is that when everyone zigs, this guy went out on a limb and ZAGGED instead.  And being the fish that stands out of the school is paying off for him. <strong> Big time!</strong></p>
<p>He&#8217;s been quietly making <em>$25K for a 1 day consultation</em> to teach people how to stop &#8220;pushing&#8221; traffic to sites the way your or I have done for so long now.</p>

<p>If you can make one or two webpages to drive all the traffic to, you&#8217;re set.  He is leveraging the buzz in the market in order to put that eager, free workforce to work building HIS business for him.</p>
<p>But you don&#8217;t need to pay his $25,000 consulting fee because today, <strong>he&#8217;s teaching you how to do it totally for free.</strong></p>

<p>It&#8217;s a looong video, but that&#8217;s good.  It&#8217;s not just a little short tease like most of these things have been lately.  It&#8217;s good to see solid material being put out by people who walk the talk.</p>

<p>Because before you decide to create and sell ANY kind of information product, it needs to pass these 3 tests:</p>
<p><strong>1.    Do the prospects in the niche your creating your product for have a Strong and Driving Emotional need?</strong></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Meaning, do they REALLY want a “thing” BADLY?  Desire can come in many forms as well either FOR or Against something. One of my favorite lines from the TV show West Wing was from the character Toby who said “I hate those people with the heat of a Nova”…  I think he was talking about some political party.  Heh. (Cause we both know they all suck rocks.  Anyway…)</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Does your prospect have “Heat of a Nova” desire?  Either <strong>for </strong>something or <strong>against</strong> something?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">If they do, you’re on the right track.</p>
<p><strong>2.    Can you drill down into your niche to a fine, granular level?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A LOT of people like golf.  Golf is a pretty broad topic.  But you can drill WAY down into it?</li>
</ul>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">You could, for example gain a foot-hold (no pun intended… well…) in the golf industry just by talking about Orthopedic Golf Shoes.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">You could gain traction in the golf market just by talking about the “X-Out” golf balls that you can by cheaper than the fancy golf balls.  Like a type of Golf Ball is gonna help your score any.  Whatever.</p>
<ul>
<li>A LOT of people like timepieces – you know, watches.  Just for a moment, think about how many different styles and brands of watches you can see the next time you go to a public place.</li>
</ul>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The number is HUGE.  And being a “Focused Expert” is always the easiest and fastest way to gain authority in a marketing-place vs. being a “Generalist”.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Drill Down friend.</p>
<p><strong>3.    Do they Value Advice? </strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em>Here’s a question:</em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Are you going to try to tell a transmission mechanic how to repair a torque converter or are you going to try to show a distance runner how to avoid shin splints?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The <em><strong>professional</strong></em> Transmission mechanic has already got a repair manual and a set of tools.  What do they need you (or your information) for?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Having said that:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">How many <em><strong>professional</strong></em> distance runners do you know?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">See what I mean?</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">A Distance Runner, almost by definition, is an amateur.  They do it for fun, for fitness, because they hate themselves (can you tell how much I enjoy running?)…</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">…and while there’s lots of tools (shoes) and accessories (clothes and distance measuring devices <em>(aka –“pedometer” – See?  I do the research so you don’t have to baby!)…</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">… there’s probably NOT a ton of practical advice about avoiding a specific injury for a specific body type for a specific age group for a specific…</p>
<p>That’s the definition of a prospect that values advice – they might feel almost alone and unique in their pursuits and desires.</p>
<p>And there’s a LOT of people that think their needs are unique.  That’s a WIN!</p>

<p>A Loss Leader is one of the more powerful brand building strategies that any business can employ.</p>
<p>And statistics, for what they&#8217;re worth, usually bear out that you&#8217;ll always earn more money per customer AND create a larger customer base if you&#8217;re prepared to sell a product for no profit, or even a LOSS in order to create a relationship with a customer.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s Risky.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Risky for a few reasons:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">1 &#8211; To sell at no profit or a loss means that you&#8217;re sometimes selling low-value stuff.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">Right?  You&#8217;ve seen the Big Box Retailers offer crazy deals on low-end electronics in order to get people in the door.  The problem is, the offer is usually &#8220;LOW END&#8221;.  And the customer experience that follows doesn&#8217;t, shall we say, build the most loyalty.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">2 &#8211; Also, it means that you MUST have a system to follow up with those new customers &#8211; meaning, you need to be ready to walk them up the &#8220;Ladder of Intimacy&#8221; to create future sales.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">&#8220;Ladder of Intimacy?&#8221;  Picture one of those A-Frame Ladders.  You&#8217;re on one side and your customer is on the other.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">At first, you&#8217;re far apart and low on the ladder &#8211; meaning, you&#8217;ve offered SOME value, and you&#8217;ve only asked for a LITTLE bit of a financial  commitment for it.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">The trick is getting them to climb that ladder.  Each rung is a more expensive offer, but it also brings YOU closer to that customer because you&#8217;re providing MORE value as you climb together.</p>
<p>Sexy, eh?  <img src='http://www.stompernet.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>The problem there is, the first thing you&#8217;re offering (because you need to keep it inexpensive for cash-flow reasons) is also probably of lower value to the customer.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s the rub.</p>
<p>What if you could invert the ladder?  What if you could <strong>deliver AMAZING value for a low price,</strong> and begin your relationship with your customer in a place where they are already confident that doing business with you will result in great things for them?</p>
<p>So, if you&#8217;ve ever asked why StomperNet makes free videos to promote its new products, the answer comes from customer comments like this:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">&#8220;If this is what you are GIVING away, I can&#8217;t imagine how good the stuff is that I get when I buy&#8221;.</p>
<p>WIN.  Profound WIN.</p>
<p>And it works, every time.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s one thing to TELL YOU how to do something, it&#8217;s another thing to SHOW YOU what it looks like, then talk about it why it works after.</p>
