The Third GN Video… Best Yet?

60

OK, folks… sometimes I worry about giving you TOO much new information in these videos – but we had a LOT of ground to cover.

This is some critical stuff – it doesn't matter how much traffic you get if you can't get that traffic to convert. And if your design is all messed up, you aren't going to convert.

So let me know what you think… join the conversation here by leaving a comment or question on the video. If you haven’t already, you can see the video here.

As you can tell, we are reading (and responding) to your comments…

Best,
Andy

There's a great article at http://scienceblogs.com/cognitivedaily/2008/02/what_illusions_tell_us_about_t.php that really illustrates how contrast effects our vision and what our mind "sees" rather than what we're really looking at.

Would love to hear comments back from your visual experts on this if you haven't seen it yet.

  8. lloyd says:

    Very informative…excellent. Thanks.

  9. Great videos. However, on both my mac and PC, only #1 plays all the way through. Most stop after a few very interesting minutes. Please give me my video fix. This is a painful tease. Alternative formats? Help!

  10. Hi, Guys

I just got a link from a newsletter that i subscribe to, with a link to the third video.

I was totally awed by what you guys were showing and it made me realize that i am crap and need to do some serious redesign and thinking on my site.

Your information is so innovating and easy to understand that i can't wait to see the previous videos.

You guys really rock the boat…

    Vince

  11. Gerald Pierce says:

The content of the video I just watched was awesome. I recently built a crappy little splash page on one of the traffic exchanges and had the right idea. But, now I see that I was way too worried about using small fonts in my text blocks. They didn't look like blocks at all. More like blobs. I'm going to change that right now! Thanks! This is goood stuff!

  12. Donna says:

Hello and thank you for your videos.
I have watched two of them so far and am buzzed to get to work on my websites.
I understand now how to do a much better job and how I am driving people away with my cluttered web pages.
    Thanks bunches,
    Donna

I don't have a web site of my own as yet, but I believe in your product. I have been studying commercial art for some time and I know the value of what our eyes SEE. It is very important to communicate fast and get to the point. Soon I'll have a use for your product to be sure i have a winning web site. Thanks nal

  14. Nate says:

Great stuff in this video. It hits home with me as i sit and watch the 3rd video…and heres why. I have pink eye. My foveal sight is about as big as a silver dollar or less, but it gave me tremendous insight as I browsed my own sites. looking for other anchor points or even chunks…and didn't find any. Basically my vision is all "peripheral". I guess you could say I have a built in scrutinizer. LOL. Thanks for the great insight in this video. Some of the stuff I did instinctively and am glad to know my design instincts were scientifically backed. nav bar chunking being one. Thanks for all the good stuff!

  15. Sharon says:

I loved your video. I really wish and need more instruction for the type of info you are presenting. I love the show and tell. I need help with building my website. I am not online yet….as I watched the video I just started clicking off all the things I need to correct. I get the most out of it when presented in simplified form and with the presentation slowed down so I can keep up. I am GREEN! New! Thanks, I am looking forward to more video presentations! Excellent!!! I will be online in January.

  16. Great Video! Finally someone is thinking about how we see when designing sites. Has anyone thought about or checked the deliberate directing of a visitor's eyes by use of, for lack of a better term, "directional swirls or groupings?" Artists often do things to attempt to keep a person looking at a work by grouping etc. so that the eye travels around in a circle on the work, over and over. Does this hold for web pages? I'm off to design/redesign what pages I control. Thank you again for an excellent video!

(Ellen: There are a lot of ways to steer the eye. There's some good data on the use of faces and that users look in the direction a picture of a person is looking. It also seems that visual direction is one of the secrets to prices like 9.99 and 1.97, where the inward facing numbers push attention to the left. Look up the concept of "closure" from gestalt psychology for more. -Comment from AndyE)

  17. Fran Lyons says:

Very good information and good page designs shown

  18. Great video Guys! I really enjoyed this video and I am going to apply these technics to my website tonight! Looking forward to more videos in the future. I think that what you are doing by giving this info away for free is amazing! Keep up the good work. Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

  19. Mike Noland says:

I've registered my e-mail address and receive your e-mails regularly. I deem the information valuable and would like to learn more about C.R.A.P. However, when I tried to download the "free" Scrutinizer software I was asked for my ID and Password. Apparently, it's only free to Stompernet members; since I was never asked to provide a password when signing up for the e-mails. Fine, except I can't find any information on becoming a member. Please help or let me know if you don't want any more members. Thanks.

(Mike: The instructions to download are on the link you received in email… no login is required. Please try the link again, we've removed the login box to reduce confusion. –AndyE)

  20. Ron Smalley says:

It was not clear HOW to post a comment. But this was a fantastic video. The best I have ever seen. The information was excellent and I am going to apply it right now to my website

  21. Lee says:

    Tried to view http://www.tapestrystandard.com
    No such site(?)

(Reply from Andy Jenkins- Lee, the name of the site is Tapestry Standard and the url is :www.european-wall-tapestries.com)

  22. Lewi says:

    Andy, great video once again.

Are you sure you guys aren't really aliens posing as humans to pick our brains?

Being a psychologist/linguist myself, I'm very impressed with the cognitive behaviorial applications of your tests.

Much of what you share parrallels the left brain, right brain research I implement in my products.

In brief, very few business owners are aware of the conscious and unconscious dynamics of the human mind, that are being played out in user activity on their sites.

When I first put my site up I published it quickly to simply have a web presence.

Your videos came at a perfect time as I am currently redesigning my sites from top to bottom.

Kudos to you and your crew, and have a Happy Holiday!

    Lewi

  23. rob says:

Great info. I think I knew all this, however, from my many years in direct mail and magazine /newspaper publishing where similar studies have been done. Maybe there really is "nothing new under the sun!" But then, it is good to get it from a new angle and with increasingly precise tools. Thanks for sharing. You join my list of "smartest guys in the room" (but NOT in the Enron way!)

  24. Craig Dewe says:

Another great video packed full of useful content.

When improving websites, I always thought about the roadmap the user and their eyes take. But you guys explain it so clearly and the take-aways are great to get people to put it into action.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to the message to the 'notification list.'

    Craig

  25. Marco Ponce says:

please dont let StomperScrutinizer have a monthly recurring fee.

one time payment or payment option please! :)

  26. Darren Beale says:

Thank you for the recent email! Have you looked at software which tracks the users mouse movement on screen, studies show the mouse movement links up with what the eyes are looking at..

This would be a perfect addition to your eye tracking studies i feel? Clicktale.com and robotoreplay.com are the 2 i know about.

    Darren

  27. Andy , this is really interesting stuff, no this is all too much for 10.31 pm on the night before christmas, so i have to make some time to sit and watch quietly in a couple of days time. when i am fully alert, to take it all in, mean time i can do a few tweeks on my pages any way.
Wow there is a lot to take in, but its just fantastic.

    Merry Christmas :o )

    Cheers Theo

  28. Arthur King says:

Wow- awesome video! Just when I think I'm beginning to get the smallest idea about how websites work you guys come along and completely blow away those old ideas! Your depth of understanding is absolutely astounding! Keep up the great work!

  29. Howard Tiano says:

Oh, and LOVE the product name!

  30. Howard Tiano says:

Awesome video, once again! Great content and production as well. Thanks!

I don't usually take many notes from these things, but I took a couple of pages of detailed notes from this last video!

You guys are "moving the free line" beyond the "paid" line!

BrAndy, we forgive you! (re: 1st video):)

    Merry Christmas all!

  31. Lee says:

So great I hope it never ends (like sequels to a great movie) can't wait for the next one!

  32. kevin says:

    Gents,

The videos are all terrific, and this one warrants being called fantastic. Truly wonderful work, guys. I literally said, "Oooooh!" out loud as I watched.

I've been a (successful) Internet marketer for ~10 years, and it continues to amaze me how much I continue to learn from you guys.

    A sincere thanks.

  33. Hi Andy,

  36. Craig says:

This has been the best video to date.
No one on the internet can touch you guys. The content makes perfect sense.

I Intuitively thought in the past about what you taught in this video.

I even thought when posting articles longer than 300 words, it's best to break up the content with sub headlines like a sales letter. Only if the goal is to have your content read ;-)

  37. Marvin says:

Great info. I to have failed huge on the internet. You have great tools to change that for my family Andy. My family and I thank you. Merry Chritsmas to you and yours.

  38. Ooma Review says:

    Thanks Andy. . .and Andy!

After watching your video, I looked at my stats and realized how much money I was leaving on the table! Starting today, okay maybe Wednesday, I will start changing the navigation on some of my sites.

    Keep the videos coming!

  39. Shama Hyder says:

Very useful stuff! Thank you so much.

Good to know we are doing the right stuff. ;)

  40. Dennis Styer says:

Excellent information, most I've never been aware of.

    Thanks for sharing

  41. Jeffrey says:

Andy, Great information, you make it so easy to understand, and easy to apply!
    Thanks

  42. Will Buckley says:

You guys are so cutting edge. I love watching what you do. With the outstanding advice you give I now watch every little nuance of your site layout and colors.

Thank You for the advice. I gotta go check out my sites and make sure they are Fovea friendly.

  43. That was HONESTLY one of the best made videos I have ever seen. Yes, I do mean by quality of the video AND its content. It really taught me a lot of things (and the other videos as well). Thanks and have a happy holidays!

  44. I almost bankrupted my family getting to my current point of failure on the internet. Coming from a 99.9% bounce rate (no that is NOT a misprint) I am so grateful to see some of the areas where I've been doing things incorrectly. I really thought 'pretty' was important. Now I realize 'smart' is where I need to be.
    Thank you so much.
    Keep 'em coming.

  45. Jean Marc says:

First thing I tought when I saw it was 30 minutes: "too long" and I started watching. It ended to soon. It was so good info that 30 minutes wasn't enough.

Thanks for those really good videos (courses).

  46. Andrew says:

    Absoulutely Awesome Guys thank you
for this im implementing changes right now

    have an awesome christmas guys

  47. Cdn. Beaver says:

    Hi 2 Andys and Brad;

Today is my Birthday. I get to do anything I want for a few hours, so I decideded to re-watch Video #1, then #2 and also #3. As you both know (I'm sure) I'm a beginner, trying to learn how to do things. Then do them right when I do get to that point. You have given me so much awesome
info. in those 3 videos (more than I learned in approximatelly 12 months of reading)
I will be putting this info to good use soon. Thank-you again for all 3 videos they are great. Looking forward to the next one.

    Merry Christmas to you
    and your family's and
    anyone reading this post.

  48. Wanda says:

    Thanks Andy,
Enjoyed seeing your easy, informative teaching style again. You're truly gifted.

    Congratulations on your marriage!

Hopefully I'll be back in SN before long.
Miss you guys…Have a Blessed and Happy Christmas!

  49. Barry says:

Amazing! It's great to see the evolution of online marketing with your scientific approach. I travel the net far and wide and I honestly have not seen anything as cool as what you guys come up with!

I have to say…for those who constantly "pay" the piper and can't seem to get it right, just re-watch that video and…"pay" attention! It's definitely the cutting edge of a very crowded(and getting worse) marketing arena. Thanks Andy! It's very exciting learning what you have discovered.

  50. Keith says:

Your videos are brilliant! Simplicity in presenting content is what I have been preaching in the Ad business for years.

From content presentation to audio you guys are SIMPLY BRILLIANT! Your are teaching people how to present all kinds of material in a simple format. Thank you! Keep up the great work!

  51. Drew says:

Is there anyway to download/view the video from the past?

(Reply from Andy Jenkins- Drew, the first two Going Natural 2.0 Videos are available in the Player's Playlist–2nd button from the right. Hope you Enjoy!)

  52. Madeline says:

Excellent presentation. Just enough information so it is not overwhelming and enough to make a difference.

  53. Andrew says:

My bounce rates have been horrible. Now I have a load of stuff to test.

    Thanks guys – just fantastic.

  54. Ray says:

Wow! Great content. Action item – gotta go make some changes on my sites now. Thanks.

  55. The video was very well done and fun to watch. But the advice hardly requires an eye-tracker. Another way to put it: hire a competent designer. Anyone who knows good design principles already knows all this. Things like headings, use of faces, and chunking of information are core elements of any good design.

  56. Kuririn says:

It was so powerful! Thank you for that.

  57. steffan says:

    Great movie, thanks..

  58. Sami says:

wow, that actually has helped me (as usual). I have a website that has over 60% bounce rate, and I tried so many times to understand why. And now thanks to Stompernet, I now do.
